Barcola Shines Bright: Liverpool Overcomes LASK with a Stunning Hat-Trick
14 October 2026
Bradley Barcola stole the spotlight with a remarkable hat-trick, marking just the fifth time a Liverpool player has achieved this feat in an away European match. The Reds faced LASK on the heels of a disappointing loss to Manchester City, and Barcola’s performance certainly lifted spirits.
Before the match, manager Andoni Iraola was peppered with questions about Barcola and teammate Florian Wirtz, both of whom had faced scrutiny over their slow starts this season. Despite the pressure, Iraola stood firm, expressing unwavering confidence in his players’ abilities.
With hefty price tags of £123m for Barcola and £116m for Wirtz, the expectations were sky-high. Wirtz showcased his talent with a solid performance in Linz, contributing an assist, but it was Barcola’s night to shine.
In his 238th career appearance, the 24-year-old scored his first-ever hat-trick, helping Liverpool bounce back from their recent defeat. Barcola demonstrated his striking prowess with two clinical finishes from open play and a simple tap-in in the second half.
Post-match, a relieved Iraola spoke glowingly about Barcola, saying, "I'm really happy for Bradley. You were asking me yesterday about him not making the numbers, and I think he played really, really well today. He made a difference."
Iraola noted Barcola’s constant threat on the pitch, particularly in one-on-one situations, and emphasized how crucial this performance was for the player's confidence. “To score a hat-trick in the Champions League is always very difficult,” he added, acknowledging the importance of the moment.
Looking ahead, Barcola will aim to replicate this form in the Premier League, starting with a challenging fixture against Brentford on Saturday. The Reds dominated the first half against LASK, racing to a three-goal lead and registering an impressive 19 shots before the break—the highest number recorded by any team in the first half of an away Champions League match since 2003-04.
While Liverpool's defense showed some vulnerability in the second half, allowing LASK to score three goals, the match was largely seen as a comfortable win. Jeremie Frimpong and Kostas Tsimikas both shone, with Frimpong netting a goal and providing two assists, and Tsimikas also contributing two assists.
Youngster Lewis Koumas also made headlines, scoring in the second half and setting a record as the youngest player to score and assist in a Champions League match for Liverpool at just 21 years old. Previously, that record was held by none other than Steven Gerrard.
However, Liverpool will need to be cautious as they face tougher challenges ahead. LASK arrived at the match winless in their last four outings, and pundit Stephen Warnock cautioned against reading too much into this victory, noting the passive nature of the game at times.
As Liverpool gears up for their next match against a formidable Brentford side, the focus will be on whether Barcola can carry this momentum forward. Warnock posed a critical question: “Can Barcola do that again, away at Brentford?” This performance was crucial for his fitness, but the real test lies ahead.
