Birmingham City Edges West Brom in Tight Derby Clash

10 October 2026

In a tense Championship derby at The Hawthorns, Birmingham City emerged victorious against West Bromwich Albion with a 1-0 win, courtesy of August Priske's penalty. This result not only handed Chris Davies’ team three crucial points but also ended Albion's impressive ten-match unbeaten run at home. The match began with a frantic pace, with both teams threatening early on. Birmingham's goalkeeper, James Beadle, showcased his quick reflexes, racing off his line to clear a risky back pass. Meanwhile, West Brom's Max O'Leary made a stunning save to deny Jay Stansfield's close-range attempt, keeping the score level. Albion nearly found the net when Aune Heggebo rattled the post with a powerful shot, leaving Beadle stranded. But it was Birmingham who would strike first. In the 41st minute, West Brom defender Nat Phillips was penalized for a foul on Priske, giving Birmingham a chance from the spot. Priske confidently converted, sending the ball high to O'Leary's left for his second goal of the season. Just before halftime, O'Leary again proved his worth, making a spectacular save to deflect a header from Phil Neumann. Despite Albion’s efforts to equalize, including a fierce shot from Jhon Solis that was blocked by a wall of defenders, they couldn’t find the back of the net. In the second half, Birmingham's Patrick Roberts sought a penalty after falling in the box, but the referee waved away his appeals. West Brom pushed hard for a goal, with substitute Barney Stewart nearly leveling the score with a glancing header that Beadle tipped over. As the match wore on, both sides had their chances, but it was Birmingham who held firm. O'Leary made another crucial stop, this time against Demarai Gray, ensuring the Blues secured their narrow victory. West Brom's James Morrison and Birmingham's Chris Davies will reflect on the match’s pivotal moments as they prepare for their next challenges.
