Jota's Resilience: Celtic Winger Opens Up After 18-Month Injury Battle
19 October 2026
Celtic's Portuguese winger Jota is back, and he’s feeling stronger than ever after facing his personal struggles during an 18-month injury absence.
Making his return as a substitute in Sunday’s thrilling 7-1 rout of Hearts was a significant milestone for the 27-year-old. His journey began in April 2025 when a serious knee injury sidelined him just as he was finding his groove again.
Before his time at Celtic, he faced challenges in Saudi Arabia with Al Ittihad, where he couldn't play due to foreign player quotas, followed by a frustrating spell at Rennes. The road to recovery was tough, but Jota is committed to making the most of his resurgence.
"In the end, it’s part of everyone’s life," he shared. "Everyone has struggles, but others face worse situations. I feel grateful and privileged to be in this wonderful sport with all these experiences."
Jota described his battle with his “demons,” saying he’s come to terms with them and even found humor in the situation. "If you don’t grow from experiences like this, you haven’t learned anything," he added.
His perspective has shifted significantly. "I’ve learned to see things differently and appreciate what I might have overlooked before. Now I have a clear vision of who I am and what I want."
For Jota, the joy of playing football is unparalleled. "Not being able to play for the past year was tough. Now, every time I step on the pitch, it means everything to me. I’m savoring every moment."
Despite not being included in Celtic's Europa League squad, his passion for the game remains a driving force. "My love for football is immense. Some might shy away after such struggles, but that passion fueled my determination to stay healthy and fit."
He emphasized that setbacks don’t mean you should stop believing. "I had moments of reflection and doubt, but my goal was always to return fit, no matter how long it took. I still have a long career ahead of me, and I’m in no rush. It’s about trusting the process."
When asked if he feels like he’s making up for lost time, Jota confidently stated, "There’s no lost time because I’ve grown a lot. It had to happen, and I’ve come out stronger on the other side."
