Keane Slams Man Utd's Chaos After Martinez's Outburst
15 October 2026
Lisandro Martinez made the switch from Ajax to Manchester United in 2022, but things have taken a turn for the worse lately.
After the team's disappointing 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, which extended their winless run to five matches, the Argentine defender didn't hold back. He criticized the club for failing to bolster the squad during the summer transfer window, especially after qualifying for the Champions League, expressing a desire for more investment and better support from technical director Jason Wilcox.
Roy Keane, a former captain and now pundit, reacted to Martinez's comments on The Overlap podcast, suggesting they mirror the turmoil within the club. "Some fans might see it as a bold move, while others might feel he’s letting the team down, especially when he himself hasn't been in top form," Keane remarked.
"It’s clear there’s chaos at United right now, almost like a circus. When a team is struggling, players need to reflect on their own performances before pointing fingers at others."
In a bid to clarify his stance, Martinez took to social media the following day, explaining that his remarks stemmed from a place of “anger and frustration.”
Keane also noted the potential implications of Martinez's outburst, stating he doesn't foresee a major fallout but raised concerns about the overall character within the squad. "We have to question the mentality in this dressing room. I see him as a center-back making quite a few errors rather than a senior figure."
Adding to the conversation, former United defender Gary Neville compared the scenario to comments made by Wayne Rooney back in 2010, highlighting the potential backlash. "From a player's viewpoint, this is problematic. It feels like a direct shot at teammates," Neville said. "If I were someone like Harry Maguire or Bruno Fernandes, I’d be furious because it implies we need reinforcements instead of focusing on our own performances."
Next up for Manchester United is a crucial Premier League clash against Leeds United on Sunday.
