Kess Elmore's Debut Shines Amid Portugal's Dominance
10 October 2026
Northern Ireland's World Cup aspirations took a hit in their recent match against Portugal, but for Kess Elmore, the 4-0 loss marked the beginning of a long-awaited international career.
Portugal showcased their clinical edge in a commanding first half at Larne, but Elmore's introduction at halftime brought a refreshing spark to the Northern Ireland side, who looked much better after the break.
Surprisingly called up for the playoff double-header against the 22nd-ranked Portugal, Elmore had almost resigned herself to the idea that she wouldn’t don the green jersey again since her training camp involvement in 2021. "I wasn't expecting Michael to call me. It was in the back of my mind, but definitely something that I kind of thought had passed," she reflected.
With experience playing in various formations and tactics, Elmore feels ready to contribute to the squad. "I hope to bring a bit of that experience because we have a young squad, and I can provide an attacking presence," she added, exuding confidence in her ability to make an impact.
Though the match was challenging for Northern Ireland against a strong Portuguese team, Elmore's debut brought a new dynamic. Her energy and movement in the final third provided much-needed support to the attack.
"I had no idea whether I'd make my debut or not, but I was thrilled to hear I'd be coming on at halftime," Elmore shared. "I wanted to bring energy and help shift the momentum. The second half was definitely better for us."
Even in the face of disappointment from the fans after a four-goal defeat, Elmore's performance hinted at positive prospects for the young squad. She was among three players earning their first caps, highlighting coach McArdle's commitment to expanding his options and deepening the team's talent pool.
Typically playing as a winger or midfielder for Sparta Prague, Elmore found herself leading the line as a lone striker during this match. Having faced some of Europe’s top clubs in the Champions League and Europa League, she welcomes this new challenge. "That was the first time playing centre-forward for a very long time since university. I’m happy to play anywhere the team needs me."
Manager McArdle also sees great potential in Elmore. "Kess brings a nice energy, especially on her debut. I'm grateful we've seen her today because she can add to the group and help us in the final third," he stated, looking ahead to their next match in Portimao.
