Lionesses Roar to Victory in World Cup Play-off Against Greece

9 October 2026

England took a significant step towards the World Cup with a 3-1 victory against Greece in the first leg of their qualifying play-off, held in Crete. Georgia Stanway, Maya Le Tissier, and Alessia Russo found the back of the net for the Lionesses, establishing a solid lead ahead of the crucial second leg in Leicester. However, a late goal from Calliste Brookshire provided a glimmer of hope for the Greek side, ranked 58th in the world. The winner of this tie will face either Slovakia or Ukraine for a spot at Brazil 2027. The match started with a bit of drama as Lauren James had a spectacular long-range chip disallowed for offside. England, who had to navigate their way through the play-offs after finishing behind Spain in qualifying, looked slightly off their best during the first half. Greece nearly capitalized on this when Ioanna Papatheodorou struck the crossbar from a remarkable 35 yards. The breakthrough finally came when Stanway finished off a slick passing move involving Laura Blindkilde Brown and Russo. After the interval, Le Tissier doubled the lead with a powerful strike from an angle, quickly followed by Russo's goal from a Beth Mead assist, putting England firmly in control. In the closing stages, Brookshire showcased some nifty footwork to score for Greece, offering a faint chance of a comeback. Meanwhile, Jess Park came close to extending England's lead, hitting the underside of the crossbar during stoppage time, suggesting the Lionesses have plenty more to give in the second leg. Reflecting on the performance, England manager Sarina Wiegman praised her team's composure despite the early pressure from Greece. "At moments we played really well... but we need to tighten up in some areas and move the ball quicker," she said. Wiegman highlighted the need for improvement, particularly after conceding the goal, while also noting the positive contributions, especially from Le Tissier, who is showing impressive growth in her game.
