Martínez Takes Aim at United's Recruitment Woes Amid Discontent

14 October 2026

After Manchester United's 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid, defender Lisandro Martínez didn't hold back in his assessment of the club's recruitment efforts, specifically targeting director of football Jason Wilcox. This candid outburst resonates with the broader dissatisfaction in the dressing room regarding squad depth and player recruitment. The loss left United with just two wins in all competitions this season and marked their worst league start in four decades, raising questions about manager Michael Carrick's future. But Martínez was keen to redirect some of that frustration towards the higher-ups, saying, "It’s easy to blame the coach and the players, but we need to look at other areas as well." Martínez made it clear he expects more from the club's investment strategy, stating, "I expect more, 100%. I expect more from our technical director. We, as players, must do better, but it’s also crucial to have a strong squad ready for challenges like this." Under Wilcox's watch, United spent a staggering £155 million in the last transfer window, bringing in midfielders like Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba. However, the decision to focus solely on the midfield while neglecting other positions, particularly left-back, has left many within the squad scratching their heads. The club had aimed to sign Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, but with Luke Shaw injured and the only senior left-back option, the lack of depth is glaring. Shaw's injury issues have compounded the problem, as he missed both the Atlético match and a recent draw with Tottenham. This situation underscores the players' belief that Carrick lacks the necessary resources to mount a serious challenge this season. United's recent exit from the Carabao Cup after making eight changes further highlighted this dilemma. Though Carrick managed to secure a third-place finish last season after taking over mid-January, his side now faces a tough uphill battle. Meanwhile, Martínez is reportedly eyeing a move away from Manchester, ideally seeking a spot at a top European club outside the Premier League.
