Rangers' Title Hopes Deflated by Dundee Draw
17 October 2026
Rangers arrived in Dundee buzzing with confidence, riding high on the momentum of seven consecutive victories. But a critical error from Dan Neil turned their optimism into disappointment, leading to a 2-2 stalemate at Dens Park that felt like a balloon bursting, according to manager Derek McInnes.
The hosts, Dundee, capitalized on a lackluster first half from Rangers, taking the lead through Bradley Fink. Just before the break, Badredine Bouanani equalized, giving McInnes’ side a much-needed lifeline.
After halftime, Rangers cranked up their intensity and looked poised for another win when Nicolas Raskin unleashed a stunning long-range strike. Yet, the game took a sharp turn when Neil's mishit backpass was intercepted by Callum Jones, allowing Dundee to snatch a deserved equalizer and deny Rangers the chance to leapfrog Celtic in the league.
“It felt like a balloon popping,” McInnes reflected on the equalizer, acknowledging the mistake that cost them dearly. He recognized that while Dundee deserved credit for their first-half performance, his team needed to be more consistent. “We can’t come away from home needing three goals to win,” he added.
McInnes did commend the 25 minutes after the break, highlighting that this phase showed the real potential of his team. “When we play like that, we’re a very good side,” he said, but former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson noted that such brief bursts of brilliance aren’t enough to secure league titles.
Ferguson emphasized that for Rangers to be successful, they need to maintain that high level of play for much longer than just 20 or 25 minutes. The performance, while impressive in parts, ultimately fell short of the standard required to dominate the league.
While McInnes pointed out that his team shouldn’t have to score three goals just to win, he acknowledged a troubling trend of missed opportunities. Rangers’ expected goals (xG) of nearly two reflected their scoring but underscored a troubling pattern throughout the season, as they have netted only 13 league goals against an expected total nearing 20.
With critical matches ahead, McInnes is wary of the need to sharpen their finishing. “We had plenty of better chances than Raskin's goal to put the game to bed,” he lamented. “It’s a recurring issue for us—dominant performances without the goals to show for it.”
