Saka Shines as Arsenal Dominates Lille 3-0
13 October 2026
Bukayo Saka was the star of the show as Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 victory against Lille in the Champions League.
The England international answered the call from manager Mikel Arteta, who challenged him to aim for two or three goals per match, highlighting the high expectations for his talent.
Though he didn’t hit that mark this time, Saka made a significant impact after coming off the bench. He assisted Eberechi Eze’s goal for 2-0 before confidently slotting home to seal the win with Arsenal's third.
With four goals in just nine appearances this season, Saka is clearly evolving into a pivotal figure for Arsenal. His involvement in attacking play has always been crucial, but recent injuries and defensive attention raised questions about his ability to maintain that edge.
Arteta has adjusted Saka's positioning this season, and he expressed his intent to have the young star closer to the goal. "That is where we need to get him," the manager stated, emphasizing that more opportunities should lead to more goals.
Saka's finish against Lille was a testament to his confidence, especially after missing a late chance in the previous match against Leeds. Arteta noted, "He’s been getting into great positions, and that unpredictability is key to his game. With his current form, he could easily have scored several more goals."
While Saka hit the 20-goal mark in a season just once during the 2023-24 campaign and netted 16 in the Premier League, his scoring prowess extends to the international stage. He has bagged five goals in his last four matches for England, including a brace in the 7-0 Nations League thrashing of Croatia.
With 19 goals in major European competitions, only behind Thierry Henry, and nine assists in the Champions League, Saka is proving to be a vital asset. Although he keeps his personal goals under wraps, Arteta is pleased with the positive response from Saka following his challenge.
"I’m really happy with his impact," Arteta said, revealing that Saka wasn't feeling well before the match but was eager to contribute. "He came on and delivered real quality."
Arteta recounted a light-hearted moment with Saka after the press conference where he expressed the need for more from him, saying, "I just killed you in the press conference, good luck tomorrow!" Saka took it well, knowing the stakes of his aspirations.
Amid the changes to the squad, Arteta made five adjustments from the Leeds match, aiming to manage the team's busy schedule. Noni Madueke shifted to the right wing after a promising performance on the left, while Mikel Merino, Eze, and Viktor Gyokeres entered the starting lineup.
Eze, starting just his third game of the season, displayed his quality with a well-taken goal, which should boost his confidence going forward.
Madueke had a mixed night; while he showcased his ability to take on defenders, questions lingered about his finishing. Nonetheless, he did assist Jurrien Timber’s elegant opening goal.
On the other hand, Gyokeres struggled to make an impact, managing only 12 touches before being substituted. In contrast, Kai Havertz, who came on for Gyokeres, looked far more integrated into the Arsenal attack, also assisting Saka’s goal.
With Saka, Havertz, and Martin Odegaard all making crucial contributions after the Gunners went 1-0 up, Arteta’s reliance on these key players is evident as they strive for further success this season.
