Swansea City Stumbles: Matos Urges Team to Channel Frustration into Future Success
17 October 2026
Swansea City faced a setback at home, losing 1-0 to West Ham United—only their fourth defeat in 21 Championship matches under the guidance of Vitor Matos.
Matos has urged his squad to harness the disappointment from this loss as they continue their quest for promotion in the Championship. The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak and marked only the second league loss of the season, with Divine Mukasa's first-half goal proving decisive.
Despite the defeat, Swansea remains at the top of the table, emphasizing their resilience. They created several chances throughout the match, with Ben Cabango coming closest to scoring after hitting the crossbar.
“It’s crucial that we recognize we could have taken something from this game,” Matos reflected after the match.
Swansea has only lost to West Ham and Southampton in 11 league matches this season, showing their competitive edge against top teams. Matos highlighted the significance of facing a strong opponent like West Ham, a team he acknowledged as a top contender for Premier League promotion.
“That frustration should linger, but more importantly, it should motivate us to elevate our training intensity and improve our overall game,” Matos added, reinforcing the need for the team to learn from this experience.
West Ham's victory lifted them to second place in the standings, marking the first time since April that a visiting team triumphed at Swansea's ground. The match was tightly contested until Mukasa found the net, prompting Swansea to push harder for an equalizer.
Cabango had two prime opportunities to score from set pieces but was unable to convert, with one shot hitting the bar and another veering wide of the goal.
West Ham also had their chances, with goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux making impressive saves against Jarrod Bowen and Pablo in the second half.
Despite the loss, Matos remains optimistic about his team's capabilities, stating, “What I witnessed today reassures me that we can compete with anyone. We need to keep striving to outmatch the league’s best.”
While the outcome was disappointing, Matos emphasized the importance of pushing forward, saying, “We gave it our all. Sadly, we couldn’t clinch a point, but that’s part of the game.”
