12 October 2026
Doug Loft, who captained both Port Vale and Gillingham, has sadly passed away at just 39 years old. His untimely death followed a medical emergency over the weekend, leaving fans and former teammates in shock.
Loft donned the Port Vale jersey from 2009 to 2014, appearing 196 times and scoring 19 goals after making the move from Brighton & Hove Albion. He went on to represent Gillingham 70 times, where he also served as captain.
Port Vale released a heartfelt statement honoring Loft, remembering him not only for his on-field accomplishments but also for the unwavering commitment and leadership he displayed during his time at the club. Their thoughts and condolences extend to Loft's family, friends, and all who knew him during this profoundly sad time.
In a touching gesture, Port Vale has sought permission from the EFL to allow players to wear black armbands and observe a minute's silence ahead of their upcoming match against Chesterfield, with the family's blessing.
Loft began his career at Hastings United before signing with Brighton in January 2006, just after turning 20. He made three appearances in the Championship and added another 46 in League One, leaving a mark on the club.
His time at Port Vale was particularly memorable, as he was named the club's Player of the Season in 2011-12 and later appointed captain, leading the team to promotion from League Two. Loft then made the switch to Gillingham in 2014, where he continued to demonstrate his leadership qualities.
Gillingham's statement similarly expressed condolences to Loft's wife, Laura, and their two children, Freya and Amelie, highlighting the impact of his loss on those closest to him.
Throughout his career, Loft also played for Colchester United, Shrewsbury Town, Dagenham & Redbridge, Billericay Town, and Tonbridge Angels, leaving a lasting impression wherever he went.
Phil Bowers from BBC Radio Stoke reflected on Loft's career, recalling how he joined Port Vale under manager Micky Adams, who had previously worked with him at Brighton. Loft's five years at Vale were marked by dedication and success, culminating in a well-deserved promotion.
Adams expressed his pride in Loft’s captaincy, highlighting his enthusiasm and effort in leading the team. Loft's legacy will surely endure in the hearts of all who admired his passion for the game.
