Uefa Sets Deadline for Fifa to Clarify Governance Issues

19 October 2026

Gianni Infantino, who has led Fifa since 2016, is gearing up for his third re-election campaign, but he's under fire from Uefa. The European football governing body has given Fifa a firm deadline of November 2 to release essential documents and respond to pressing inquiries about its governance and decision-making processes. During a recent Fifa Council meeting, Infantino expressed regret over his controversial World Cup sell-off plan, yet he fell short of fully clarifying how the proposal came to be. In a letter obtained by BBC Sport, Uefa's general secretary Theodore Theodoridis criticized Fifa for not addressing several critical issues. "There are still many unanswered questions, and the requested information has yet to be provided," he stated. The letter, spanning eight pages, posed inquiries on various topics, including the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE), the Fifa Peace Prize, and the questionable suspended ban handed to USA striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. Theodoridis emphasized that acknowledging past mistakes and hinting at potential governance reforms do not clarify how decisions were made or why the Fifa Council was not properly involved. He insisted, "Any refusal to release information must be justified, with clear reasoning provided for the specific grounds. We need answers now; they can't wait for the next Fifa Council meeting." Uefa has not detailed what actions they might pursue if Fifa fails to comply with the deadline. Infantino was first confronted with these questions at the previous Fifa Council meeting, where Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt, who is also a Fifa vice-president, stated, "If he doesn’t address these questions, he’s not fit to be Fifa president." Fifa has been contacted for a response, and further updates are expected.
