Wiegman Signs On: England Women's Head Coach Committed Until 2029
19 October 2026
Sarina Wiegman is set to remain at the helm of the England women's team until 2029 after extending her contract. Originally scheduled to conclude after the upcoming World Cup, this new deal positions her to chase a remarkable third consecutive European Championship title with the Lionesses.
Since stepping into the role in September 2021, Wiegman has already made waves, having previously guided the Netherlands to Euro victory in 2017. She boasts an impressive record, reaching the finals of the last five major tournaments, including two World Cup runner-up finishes.
"I am thrilled to continue with this squad and can't imagine a better job in football," Wiegman expressed. "Working with the FA and being part of such a dedicated team striving for success in England and the growth of women's football energizes me every day."
The Lionesses, who are favorites to progress through a two-leg playoff against Ukraine, will aim for World Cup glory in Brazil next June and July. Wiegman emphasized, "My primary focus right now is the World Cup and helping this squad achieve their potential in the coming years."
This marks Wiegman's second contract extension, paving the way for her to potentially lead Team GB at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles if they qualify. As she approaches her 57th birthday next week, she will continue to work closely with her coaching team, including Janneke Bijl, Arvid Smit, and Darren Ward.
Mark Bullingham, the CEO of the Football Association, praised Wiegman, stating, "Sarina is an exceptional coach with an unmatched record in major tournaments. I'm delighted to continue working with her for the next Euro cycle."
Despite avoiding questions about her future during the recent international break, Chelsea midfielder Keira Walsh voiced the sentiments of many players, saying, "I obviously want her to stay." She added, "Sarina’s the boss; I would never question her decisions, but I think everyone in England would love for her to remain. I've played numerous games under her, and I truly value her leadership."
