Chirewa's Late Heroics Keep Wolves Flying as Burnley Stumbles Again
16 October 2026
Wolves' substitute Tawanda Chirewa made headlines by scoring just moments after stepping onto the pitch, helping his team come from behind to hand Burnley yet another disappointing result at Turf Moor. This latest defeat marks 21 games without a home win for the Clarets, a streak that’s now extended beyond a full year.
Chirewa entered the fray in the 72nd minute, replacing Sean Neave. Shortly after, Mateus Mané capitalized on a heavy touch by Igor Julio, setting up Chirewa for a well-placed angled shot that found the back of the net, despite Grégoire Coudert's attempt to intervene.
This victory was crucial for Wolves, who had initially fallen behind to Jamie Vardy's first goal for Burnley. Fer López, however, equalized for the visitors, setting the stage for Chirewa’s late-game heroics.
For Burnley, this defeat is a bitter pill to swallow. Their last home victory came against Leeds back on October 18, 2022, and they now face the prospect of extending this grim run further. Last season, Sheffield Wednesday set a record for the longest winless home streak, which Burnley is now eyeing with concern.
Head coach Nicky Hayen expressed uncertainty about his future but remained resolute. “I will not give up,” he stated. “I’m focused on the present. We showed courage in the first half and scored a good goal, but a mistake before halftime shifted the momentum.”
He acknowledged that the second half was more evenly matched, but a lapse in concentration led to Wolves’ decisive goal. “You could feel the atmosphere change in the stands – and I understand why,” Hayen added.
Looking ahead, Burnley will host Portsmouth next, followed by a crucial clash against their rivals Blackburn on November 22. Just days prior, they were denied a home win when Charlton leveled the score in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Vardy, who turns 40 in January, showcased his enduring prowess with a low strike in the 20th minute that left Wolves’ goalkeeper José Sá with no chance. However, Burnley failed to build on their first-half advantage, and a mistake by captain Kyle Walker allowed López to equalize just before the break.
Wolves, dealing with an injury crisis worsened by the loss of Raúl Jiménez and Adam Armstrong, arrived looking to bounce back after two straight losses. They came alive in the second half, with Coudert making key saves before Chirewa ultimately secured the win.
“Sometimes substitutions don’t work, but today it did,” said Wolves’ coach César Peixoto. “Tawanda showed he has the right mentality. It’s an important three points, but we need to keep our focus.”
Tommy Doyle had a chance to add to the scoreline late in the game, but Wolves held on for a crucial win as the final whistle was met with boos from the disgruntled Burnley fans.
