Clarets Stumble Again: Wolves Deal Burnley Another Home Defeat
16 October 2026
Burnley’s home woes reached new depths on Friday night as they fell 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Turf Moor.
This defeat means the Clarets have not won a league game at home for nearly a year, with their last victory dating back to October 18, 2025, when they beat Leeds 2-0 in the Premier League.
Since then, it’s been a grim tally of 11 losses and 10 draws, marking the longest winless run at home across England’s top four leagues.
Jamie Vardy, making waves with his return to English football, opened the scoring for Burnley, marking his first goal since coming back last month. The 39-year-old struck with his second attempt of the match, a reminder that he still has the knack for finding the net.
However, the joy was short-lived for the Clarets. Defensive lapses allowed Wolves to snatch control of the match with Fer Lopez equalizing after a costly mistake from Kyle Walker, who lost possession near his own area.
Lopez capitalized on the blunder, firing the ball into the net off the inside of the post, turning the tide in Wolves' favor. Just when it seemed Burnley might hold on, Tawanda Chirewa struck with 18 minutes to go, taking advantage of another defensive miscue to head the ball over Gregoire Coudert and into the net.
Burnley struggled to respond in the closing stages, and the home crowd expressed their frustration with audible boos as the final whistle blew, sealing their fifth league defeat this season.
After the match, Burnley manager Nicky Hayen reflected on the performance, saying, "A difficult defeat. The first half was really good in terms of our organization. We scored a good goal and had decent chances. But we gave away two goals due to individual mistakes, which makes winning tough."
He added, "They apologized in the dressing room, and while I understand it wasn't intentional, it doesn't change our reality. We need to shift our mindset to turn this around."
As for the ongoing struggles at Turf Moor, Hayen acknowledged the weight of the past but emphasized the need to focus on the future: "We can't dwell on history, even if it’s repeated. We just have to believe that things will eventually change."
