Pressure Mounts on Crystal Palace Manager Pierre Sage After Disappointing Start

19 October 2026

Pierre Sage stepped into the role of Crystal Palace manager back in June with a three-year contract. However, after a rocky start, his position is now under heavy scrutiny following a string of disappointing results. The team's recent 5-0 loss to Brighton has intensified the spotlight on Sage, who has managed to secure only two victories in his first seven Premier League matches. Their defensive woes are glaring, having conceded 17 goals, the highest in the league. Despite this, some within the club feel for the Frenchman, noting that he’s been handed a tough situation. Injuries have plagued the squad, and the absence of key players like Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr—who are both grappling with fitness and personal issues—has certainly complicated his start at Selhurst Park. Co-owner Steve Parish is known for his measured approach, having previously resisted calls to act hastily when former manager Oliver Glasner criticized the board for selling Marc Guehi to Manchester City. Glasner ultimately completed his contract and even led the team to victory in the Europa Conference League. Yet, Sage is not out of danger. With critical fixtures against Besiktas and Newcastle looming, further poor performances could compel Parish to make a tough decision about Sage's future. Some insiders believe that Sage's days might already be numbered, especially if a suitable replacement becomes available. The club's attempt to secure their first-choice candidate, Andoni Iraola, after Glasner's departure highlights the complexities of the managerial landscape. Sage is grappling with the aftermath of losing key players, including Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise, and Marc Guehi, who were instrumental in the club's recent successes. The absence of former sporting director Dougie Freedman has also created a noticeable void in the club's structure. Despite the challenges, Sage must take responsibility for the alarming defensive record. Historically, Palace has thrived on solid defensive foundations, but conceding nearly 2.5 goals per game is a stark departure from that ethos and raises significant concerns among the club’s hierarchy. Currently, Palace is on track to concede 92 goals this season, a statistic not seen since Sheffield United allowed 104 goals in 2024. The team’s youthful defense, highlighted by 20-year-old Jaydee Canvot and 18-year-old Honest Ahanor, has also faced criticism. There’s a growing belief among fans that the club's summer defensive signings haven’t adequately addressed these issues. While Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben Chilwell, and Oscar Mingueza joined on free transfers, loans for Axel Disasi and Ahanor haven’t provided the stability needed. Financial constraints due to Uefa regulations have further complicated Palace’s transfer activity, with the sale of Munoz to Nottingham Forest for £22 million being one of the more difficult decisions made to comply with those rules. However, those financial issues do little to alleviate the pressure on Sage. The upcoming matches against Besiktas in the Europa League and a Premier League clash with Newcastle present a critical juncture for him. Two favorable results could shift the narrative, offering Sage a chance to build momentum. But two losses? That could spell the end of his time at Crystal Palace.
