Swansea's Win Overshadowed by Racism Row at Millwall
13 October 2026
Swansea City maintained their grip on the top spot in the Championship with a dramatic last-minute winner against Millwall, but the match was temporarily interrupted for nearly seven minutes due to a report of racist chanting.
Referee Edward Duckworth paused the game in the 65th minute to address the situation, consulting with both managers—Alex Neil of Millwall and Vítor Matos of Swansea—as well as the fourth official. A security guard was involved, and the referee appeared to indicate a section of the crowd behind the Swansea bench. When play resumed, an announcement confirmed the allegations of racist behavior, stating that police were reviewing CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
Despite this unsettling incident, Swansea emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, thanks to a late goal that secured all three points.
In another thrilling encounter, Middlesbrough edged out Stoke City 3-2 in a match full of drama. Brazilian defender Neto Borges, who had earlier scored an own goal, netted a late winner to cap off an eventful evening. This was his first league goal in 18 months, helping Boro maintain their second-place standing with an unbeaten streak now stretching to five matches.
Middlesbrough initially took the lead through Callum Brittain just after half-time. However, they were soon pegged back when Borges deflected a shot into his own net. Will Lankshear then put Boro back in front, but Stoke's Robert Bozenik equalized late on. Just as it seemed a draw was on the cards, Borges struck again in stoppage time to clinch the win.
Watford’s miserable campaign hit another low as they suffered a 5-1 thrashing at Cardiff City, dropping them into the relegation zone. Republic of Ireland's rising star Jack Moylan was the standout performer, scoring twice in the first half, including a penalty he won himself. Hornets captain Mattie Pollock not only conceded the penalty but also scored an own goal, further compounding Watford's woes.
Birmingham City showcased their promotion ambitions with a commanding 4-0 victory over a 10-man Preston North End at St Andrew’s. The home side benefitted from two goals by August Priske and contributions from Liam Millar and Demarai Gray to secure their third win in four matches, while Preston remains anchored to the bottom of the table.
In a dramatic finish, Ivan Mesik scored a last-minute equalizer for Charlton Athletic, earning them a 2-2 draw against Burnley, who are still searching for their first home league win in over a year. Largie Ramazani had given Burnley the lead, but Mesik's late goal denied them victory.
West Bromwich Albion staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Wrexham 2-1 at Stok Cae Ras. After Kieffer Moore’s stunning strike gave Wrexham hope, West Brom responded with two goals in quick succession to secure the win, ending a dismal run of form.
Wolverhampton Wanderers faced their first home league defeat of the season, falling 3-1 to Bolton Wanderers. Atsuki Ito opened the scoring for Bolton, and despite Jean-Ricner Bellegarde's equalizer, the visitors sealed their victory with two late goals.
Lastly, Blackburn Rovers claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Bristol City thanks to a stellar performance from goalkeeper Balazs Toth, who made several stunning saves. Oladapo Afolayan scored the decisive goal in the 38th minute, helping Blackburn secure the three points.
