Ronaldo Banned for 30 Days and Fined Over National Team Dispute

19 October 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo's latest chapter with the Portuguese national team has taken a tough turn. The Portuguese Football Association has slapped the 41-year-old forward with a 30-day suspension, alongside a €255 (£215) fine, after he walked out of the national team camp amid a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus regarding his position in the squad. This incident occurred shortly before Portugal's Nations League clash with Denmark. Ronaldo expressed his frustration after being an unused substitute in a previous game against Norway, accusing Jesus of breaking promises about his playing time. While Jesus has denied any formal agreements with Ronaldo, he remains optimistic about the player's future with the team following Portugal's recent 2-1 victory. The disciplinary council acted on the matter, finding Ronaldo in violation of Article 160(1) of their regulations. The proceedings commenced on October 9, based on events that unfolded two days prior. Interestingly, the statement from the council did not detail whether the suspension would affect specific matches or if any time served under a provisional ban would count towards the 30-day penalty. In the aftermath, Ronaldo issued an apology for not acknowledging the fans post-Norway match and for departing without proper communication. He also affirmed his willingness to contribute to the team once he has completed any associated sanctions. Pedro Proença, the president of the Portuguese FA, has made it clear that there is a desire within the organization for Ronaldo to be welcomed back into the national squad once the situation is resolved.
