Ronaldo Faces 30-Day Ban from Portuguese Football Federation
19 October 2026
Cristiano Ronaldo is facing a 30-day suspension imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation after a dramatic exit from his national team camp last month.
The 41-year-old captain walked away from Portugal’s Nations League squad in September, frustrated after remaining an unused substitute against Norway and learning he wouldn’t start against Denmark.
In a detailed statement, Ronaldo accused Portugal’s coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice, claiming it was an “absolute breach of trust.”
On October 9, Ronaldo was provisionally suspended, leading to the federation's disciplinary council confirming the full charge against him on Monday, along with a fine of 255 euros (£189).
It remains unclear if the suspension will affect any upcoming matches or whether the time already served under the provisional ban will count toward this new 30-day period.
Coach Jesus has refuted claims of any prior agreement with Ronaldo but hinted at the possibility of his return following Portugal's recent 2-1 win.
Ronaldo has taken responsibility for his actions, apologizing to teammates and fans, and acknowledged that he deserves the punishment.
Pedro Proenc, the president of the FPF, expressed a strong desire to see Ronaldo rejoin the national team once this situation is resolved.
The football icon, who has claimed the Ballon d'Or five times, boasts an impressive record of 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, contributing to their triumphs in Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles.
